Alexandra Morton, oops, make that Dr. Alexandra Morton, received an honourary doctorate from Simon Fraser University June 16. Dr. Morton was honoured by SFU for her work on sea lice research and fish farming practices and her dedication to the preservation and conservation of the Pacific Ocean and its species. It was Dr. Morton who won a stunning court case that revealed the federal government and not the provincial government had governing authority over the fish farming industry. That change of authority is expected to happen later this year or early 2010. Her research into sea lice and its impact on out-migrating young wild Pacific salmon has also caused concern in many corners about the affect of the industry on wild salmon populations. She also just completed what was called the Get Out Migration, a walk from her home in the Broughton Archipeligo to Victoria. Thousands lined the streets and highways on her walk to the legislature and a crowd of about 5,000 joined her on the lawns there to urge the governments to move salmon farms out of the ocean to closed containment systems.
