While Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made clear his intentions to
carry out a judicial inquiry into the collapse of the Fraser River
Sockeye in 2009, Prince Rupert city council will be making it known
that they expect equal consideration following a disastrous commercial
fishing season on the North Coast.
“I would ask council to consider sending a letter to the federal
government requesting the DFO be instructed to commence a judicial
review of the 2009 Skeena River fishery and its failure of some salmon
stocks. This would be similar to what the federal government has
committed to do with regard to the Fraser River fishery,” said mayor
Jack Mussallem, a motion that was subsequently put forward and passed
unanimously.
